We are a Group of Concerned Citizens Fighting to Protect our Historic Main Street. We are asking local citizens to help protect our community by contacting city council members to ask them to protect Historic Main Street.
St. Charles Main Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the largest Historic District west of the Mississippi River. Our Main Street is a unique community asset; it is the “front door” of our community. The Main Street community has spent over 50 years of time, talent and treasure to restore over 150 structures that makes it uniquely St.Charles. When preserved and programmed, it promotes community pride and investment.
If passed, this Bill will bring more criminal activity to our community.
Makes our Main Street less attractive to families and children, friend groups and seniors who walk, shop and dine on Main Street.
Less attractive for tourist and guest to stay overnight in B&B's and Guest Houses. Unlimited Bars & Nightclubs do not contribute to quality tourism destination.
Buildings purposely damaged. Windows busted and bullet holes in store fronts. Flowers, trees, trashcans and street furniture destroyed. Light poles, restrooms and public property damaged. Trash, urine and vomit on sidewalk.
For public spaces and private property.
Lower food sales reduces Tourism Tax. Bars do NOT pay tourism Tax!
Will reduce property values.
Main Street has one of the HIGHEST occupancy rates in the country! Sensible limits on liquor, more restaurants, more shops, offices and residences are good economic development for Main Street.
More Bars & Nightclubs discourage good economic development and mixed uses on Historic Main Street.
According to Police Chief's reports, the MAJORITY of criminal activity takes place between 11pm-2am. Restrict liquor sales to 11pm to match plan with French town.
Entertainment district with more Bars requires additional police resources limiting their ability to respond promptly to calls in other parts of the City.
New liquor bill(s) will completely change existing basic ordinances even for South Main Street.
No cost benefit analysis of dollars for police overtime vs taxes collected vs damage to community property and city reputation has been considered.
Bill Rewards operators who grab profitable easy liquor sales at the expense of our community! This is not good economic development. Benefits a few at a significant cost to our City.
No guidance for issuing or monitoring Liquor Sales Use Permits exists. No limitation remains on number of Bars anywhere in our City as has existed for over 60 years. The definitions of Restaurants and Bars changes.
If this bill passes, ALL of St. Charles will have unlimited Bars and Nightclubs. Restaurants near you may become Bars or Nightclubs.
Main Street is home to some of your favorite shops, restaurants and destinations. These businesses choose to operate on Main Street because of the family friendly environment it provides their customers and employees. As a community, we should be focused on attracting quality business owners and keeping our street safe. Nightclubs on Main Street have historically attracted fights, break-ins, gun violence, and drug activity- all of which deter local business owners from choosing to operate on our street.

Despite overwhelming opposition, the City Council voted to expand the number of bars in St. Charles by getting rid of the restaurant/bar designation to effectively turn every establishment that serves alcohol into a bar and/or nightclub. WHY? This will lead to more shootings, violence, vandalism, attract criminals to our city, destroy the city's reputation, make it unsafe for families, and requiring taxpayers to hire more police! WHY? Please contact your Council member and come to City Council meetings to have your voice be heard.
Despite overwhelming opposition, City Council VOTED to loosen liquor regulations! 6 YES, 4 NO
